Sneaker Nerd: History of Nike Air via Sole Collector

As Air Max day approaches, Sole Collector gives us an inside look into Air Max history.

There's no name more connected to the Air Max, Nike's game-changing approach to cushioning that debuted in 1987, than Tinker Hatfield. The man responsible for a number of important designs along the Nike timeline has countless times retold the story of his visit to the Pompidou Centre in France that first served as the inspiration for making Nike Air technology visible. But he doesn't deserve all the credit. Another Nike veteran that was key to kicking off the visible air revolution is Dave Forland, Nike's Director of Cushioning Innovation, who began working on the project that would eventually become the Nike Air Max back in 1985.

His genesis at the company dropped him right in on the process of building the first Air Max. "I had just been hired around the time development started for visible air," Forland says. "It didn’t take very long to figure out the company was really interested in showing Nike Air Technology to the consumer."
