Guy Fawkes also liked to be known as Guido Fawkes. He was born on 13 April 1570 in Stonegate, York, and went to school at St. Peter's in York. This is the only place in the UK that doesn't celebrate bonfire night
The Guy Fawkes mask with its broad smile, red cheeks, upturned moustache and thin, pointed beard is a depiction of Fawkes.
The conspirators were tried on 31 January 1606 and then hung, drawn and quartered. Though it's tradition to burn an effigy of Fawkes, the man himself wasn't thrown into bonfire.
The slang term of calling another person "guy" comes from the name Guy Fawkes. The original meaning was "an ugly, repulsive person." Over time it just referred to a man.
